alt="Georgina Community Church"

Would you like to learn more about volunteering? The Salvation Army York Housing and Support Services (YHSS) Community Advisory Council serves Belinda’s Place and Sutton Youth; we are growing again and would love to meet you.

Here is an inspiring message from our Executive Director, Rochelle Saunders. It is a heartfelt thank-you to all of our volunteers, shared by Rochelle herself, at our annual YHSS Volunteer Appreciation Dinner and Celebration.

Also, below, is an invitation to join us for our quarterly Community Advisory Council dinner meeting on Wed, June 6, to learn more about what we do, and how you may be able to help too.

“’Legends say that hummingbirds float free of time, carrying our hopes for love, joy, and celebration. The hummingbird’s delicate grace reminds us that life is rich, beauty is everywhere, every personal connection has meaning, and that laughter is life’s sweetest creation.’ – Picture of hummingbirdPapyrus

Welcome to each and every one of you, for you are our hummingbirds! You bring hope, love, joy, and give us so much to celebrate. Volunteers are an important part of the work we do, and we could not possibly do this work without you.

Did you know that last year 148,000 Salvation Army volunteers dedicated approximately 1.2 million hours of their time to help those in need? Your dedication and effort have an immense impact on the amount of life-changing support we are able to give to the most vulnerable people across York Region, Canada, and Bermuda Territory. YOU are vital to the work we do and help The Salvation Army York Housing and Support Services continue making a difference every day.

In this time of gratitude, we give tremendous thanks for you. We value you as a friend and appreciate your confidence in us. Counting you among our supporters is something for which we are especially grateful.

Because of your commitment and dedication, in 2017, we were able to:

  • Serve 246 youth and 137 women in emergency and transitional housing
  • Serve 188 youth and 163 women in drop-in
  • Serve 34 youth and 75 women in aftercare
  • House 35 youth and 213 women in our community
  • Assist with preventing 180 housing evictions
  • Help 132 youth gain employment
  • And 136 youth received educational support

Without volunteers, our holistic approach for the betterment and wellbeing of those in need in our community would be much harder to accomplish, so thank you! In our eyes, this is a true example of, “God loving people through people.”

. . . We also extend our warmest appreciation to the special guests and family members of our reverent volunteers. We realize that there is a commitment and sometimes a sacrifice for families and friends of volunteers and we want to thank you too . . .”

Our Community Advisory Council (CAC) helps to increase the visibility of The Salvation Army York Housing and Support Services, and as such encourages and garners community support. The professional volunteer-backing and guidance is invaluable in program development and community engagement. CAC helps to secure funding and/or fund-raise and ensure overall accountability. Our members contribute on many different levels according to their areas of expertise, preferences, and availability. We also have subcommittees for communications and technology, fundraising and finance, community engagement and membership, program evaluation and strategic planning, and spiritual care. This provides our members another opportunity to direct their soft skills and experience in an area that best suits their gifts.
