Community Helping Community – York Housing and Support Services

As you can well imagine, like with other social service organizations, The Salvation Army York Housing and Support Services is always fully engaged behind the scenes helping the homeless and those at risk of being homeless in our community and beyond. Although our online presence is very important to us—in part to shine a light on the often daily needs of those we serve, and to let others know how they can help too—we accept that it takes time to raise awareness and tell our community’s story in a meaningful and dignified way.

This is why our volunteers mean so much to The Salvation Army YHSS. Our history shows that many hands make light work, and we can in fact move mountains when we work together the way our staff and our volunteers do.

In December of 2018, our community helped us have our best Kettle Campaign yet. The dollars raised locally stay local to help with the extras we otherwise do not have the funding to do. YHSS has been responsible for the day-to-day operations, programs, and support for almost three years at Belinda’s Place in Newmarket and twelve years at Sutton Youth Services in Sutton West. We are tremendously grateful for the businesses that support the Kettle Campaign, and for the generosity of their patrons. Just a few short months ago as many were celebrating Christmas holidays, they also donated at the kettles stationed in Newmarket and Sutton. Heartfelt thanks go to repeat hosts, Newmarket Metro (Yonge St and Savage Rd) with an amazing $12,838.65 contributed, and to Sutton No Frills with an incredible $15,245.15 raised. Much appreciation also goes to the thoughtful folks at Nature’s Emporium, first-time hosts, whose patrons helped with $4,910.50. The ripple effect of your continued support reaches farther than you will ever know.

What else have we been up to this year?

  • For the first time, we hosted a table at the East Gwillimbury Women’s Show on April 27th to support the event’s fundraising efforts for Southlake Regional Health Centre Foundation and to raise aware about what we do, how we can assist those in need, and where volunteer opportunities exist should you want to help too.
  • The staff at YHSS hosted a Volunteer Appreciation Celebration & BBQ on May 15th at Belinda’s Place to express their deep gratitude for all the volunteers that work along side of them every day whether onsite and/or via the Community Advisory Council.
  • We’ve also met several times as a Community Advisory Council to build on our community engagement and fundraising goals. In case you’d like to consider volunteering on our council and/or with clients, don’t hesitate to reach out to our wonderful Volunteer Coordinator for more information, Corriene Edison at Corriene_Edison@cansalvationarmy.org.
  • Our council meets again on Wed, June 6 in Aurora, 5pm to 8pm. And a Volunteer Social and Fundraiser is in the works, to take place this summer in Georgina.
